A psychological assessment is a thorough process designed to evaluate an individual's psychological well-being. Depending on the goals of the assessment, it may encompass an examination of various aspects, including cognitive, emotional, achievement, and behavioural functioning.

These assessments are primarily geared towards recognizing an individual's strengths and identifying underlying challenges that might influence their functioning. The insights and possible diagnoses gained from the assessment results play a pivotal role in charting the path forward to ensure the individual's well-being and success. Depending on the assessment outcomes, personalized recommendations are offered to facilitate any required treatments or academic/workplace accommodations. This approach aims to empower individuals and enhance their overall quality of life.

  • Each child is unique, with their own set of abilities. However, some may face challenges related to mental health (e.g., depression, anxiety, etc.), learning (e.g., reading, writing, math), giftedness, developmental (e.g., intellectual developmental disorder, etc.), or attention. An assessment may uncover their strengths and provide tailored strategies to help them reach their potential.

A psychological assessment involves data collection through clinical interviewing, file reviews, observations, and standardized psychometric tests. Depending on the results, this knowledge can help formulate possible diagnoses, develop treatment plans, support programming at school, or gain access to necessary support from other providers.

  • Many factors may affect an adult’s functioning in social, academic (e.g., post-secondary), or occupational settings. These challenges may have not been addressed from a young age or may have manifested in adulthood. Depending on the referral question, a comprehensive approach is utilized through information gathering (e.g., file review, information from key informants, etc.) and psychometric tests using adult norms.

The knowledge gathered can help formulate possible diagnoses, develop treatment plans, support programming at school or work, and access to necessary support from other providers.
